I remembered black skies, the lightning all around me
I remembered each flash as time began to blur
Like a startling sign that fate had finally found me
And your voice was all I heard that I get what I deserve
Sam had left him for that Iona girl. Leo turned and ran, tears burning at his eyes. His only friend was being stolen. Stolen. Taken away from him. Robbed. The tears faded, to be replaced by a burning anger, but even that faded as he reached the shapeshifter's turf. There was a light on in the lab room. Leo walked towards it like a moth drawn to flame.
Cal's eyes drifted open. The world around her seemed disturbingly
familiar, in fact, she half expected three doctors to loom over her again, with Leo peering over the one on her left's shoulder.
A single man looked at her, though, leaning forward and smiling, "Welcome to Chikorendel, Callan. This is your new home~." he smiled welcomingly, and memories swam back to Cal.
She was Callan Doe, and the last person she'd spoken to was him, he'd cornered her in a dark alley, and then...
Cal was sure something else had happened, but God, it made her head hurt to think about that.
She moaned leadenly, forcing her eyes shut. If she just went back to sleep, when she woke up, this would all be a dream, and she'd wake up . . . somewhere.
There wasn't anywhere for her to wake up at, though. No place that she called home.
Mercury frowned - none of his other test subjects had reacted like this - "You okay?" he poked her side curiously.
Cal cringed away from the touch, "No, no, it's just a dream. Don't wake me up. I want it to be a dream." she moaned loudly.
Mercury blinked, turning away, towards the door, where Leo skulked. With Sam off somewhere, the boy always ended up wherever he was - well, for once, it was a good thing. Mercury opened the door and glanced at Leo, "We have someone who's really freaked out. Go talk to her." he commanded.
Leo blinked - how had Mercury known he was out here? But there wasn't time, he moved briskly towards Cal, unsure of what he was supposed to do. "You all right?" it was all he could think of as he gazed at the girl, who looked distantly familiar.
His voice... It sounded like something she knew, something she knew very well. Make that someone. "Leo?" her voice cracked with fear, "Leo, what's going on? Why am I dreaming this?" Dreaming. Yeah, she had to be dreaming. Cal clutched to that rational explanation.
Right. How did she know him? He resolved to find that out later, "It's . . . not a dream." he spoke gently, not the slightest hint of a nervous stutter in his voice. He felt like he knew her. It was comforting.
"Leo, I don't want it to be real. I want to be Callan, I don't like this! I feel so strange. I feel . . . like a cat!" her eyes cracked open, and she recoiled from the face that loomed over her. Ears peeked out from grey hair, "Oh God, I'm going to die..." she moaned, her eyes slamming shut as fast as they possibly could.
Leo frowned, "Cal?" he gazed at the girl, who thrashed from side to side, "...C-Call?" Okay, now he was sure they were both dreaming. Cal had left him several months ago - maybe it was a year, by that point? - and never showed up again. How did she end up here?
Cal found it somewhere within herself to open her eyes and look at the monstrosity that was Leo, "Yeah, it's me. Now, would someone kindly tell me what the hell is going on?"
Leo frowned, "You're at a place called Chikorendel Lab. I suppose you'll want to know more - Mercury will take care of that--"
Mercury interrupted Leo harshly, "I'm not doing anything, she's your job, Leo."
Okay... Leo shrugged, "Mercury, can I take her to the library, then?"
Mercury shrugged himself, "I don't care. Just make her manageable."
Cal listened to the rapid exchange with growing fear. What was happening? Tears pricked at the corner of her eyes, burning unbidden at her eyes, and she cringed from Leo as he ran a hand through her hair, "Please..." she whispered, "Don't touch me."
Leo recoiled from her worlds, reminded painfully of his mother, though she hadn't meant that, and he closed his blue eyes, forcing himself to breath, "Cal, look, I'm taking you to the library so you can learn some about Chikorendel." he turned towards Mercury, "Tell the guards to treat us like we aren't there. Have them let three others in if three others want to get in. I want her desensitized. If I scare, the others are going to terrify her." Grimly, Leo turned and carefully freed her from her bindings, lifting Cal to her feet.
She leaned her weight against him, staggering slightly as they began to walk, Mercury speaking rapidly into a walky-talky behind them.
They walked together, somehow making it to the library with her weight resting on Leo's shoulder as he led them on, each step becoming even more laborious. Things weren't going right. When he'd imagined meeting her again, they were both happy to be together, embracing and rejoicing. Instead she'd cringed away from his touch, scared. Of Leo. That was beyond wrong.
The guards let them in without a word, and Leo carefully led Cal to a table near the front, "Stay. Here." he ordered. If she'd been in any other mood, she would have snapped at him, but instead, Cal cringed away.
This annoyed Leo slightly, but he moved to the proper section and snagging a book on the history of genetics, followed rapidly by a book about animals. Now all he needed was a shapeshifter and a DNA. But they would come to him later. First, he needed to explain what had happened to her.
Leo made it back to Cal, glad for the distraction from Sam, and dropped both books on the table. She jumped, gazing up at him with shadowed eyes, "Don't scare me like that." she sounded very weary, tired of the world.
She grabbed the book about genetics first, and opened it, forcing her eyes to focus on it. Leo watched with an approving gaze. She was his friend, perhaps even more so than Sam, but even though nearly a year had passed since he'd seen her last, he still remembered her so perfectly.
There was nothing in sight but memories left abandoned
There was nowhere to hide, the ashes fell like snow
And the ground caved in between where we were standing
And your voice was all I heard that I get what I deserve
