A seemingly endless stream of bubbles reached the surface, the figure who rested on a ledge around 6 feet down, fingers wrapped around a handle of sorts nearby, was the source, and he exhaled steadily. 1 alligator, 2 alligators, 3 alligators, 4 alligators...
Still exhaling steadily, he continued to count, rather grateful for the DNA of the jellyfish, which, while it didn't give him gills, certainly made his lungs all the more powerful, 31 alligators, 32 alligators, 33 alligators, 34 alligators, 35 alligators...
Still more bubbles, they were disrupted by a small form swimming above him, a fish shifter of some sort, most likely, 100 alligators, 101 alligators, 102 alligators, 103 alligators, 104 alligators, 105 alligators...
The stream of bubbles still wasn't weakening, going on and on steadily, and Sam looked hardly worried by how long he'd been down there, nor did anyone else. They were used to how long he could hold his breath by now, and the bubbles made it clear he was still alive, which was all that anyone cared about, really. Sam didn't mind though, he knew he had his own place in the world, which was right here... 150 alligators, 151 alligators, 152 alligators, 153 alligators, 154 alligators...
Still going strong, though the bubbles were beginning to weaken, though not all that obviously. Sam could feel the beginnings of an urge to breath, he had about a minute's left of air in his lungs if he stopped exhaling... 200 alligators, 201 alligators, 202 alligators, 204 alligators, 205 alligators...
No more bubbles, distantly, Sam could see faces that looked worried, from what he could tell, and he shifted his position and powered up from the ledge with strong legs, bursting up towards the surface, and clearing the water by a good few inches before splashing back in again, sending large amounts of water flying every which way.
Several people shied away, looking annoyed about getting wet as Sam floated on his back, serene and unperturbed as ever.

Crimson eyes watched the water with little expression. Ears swiviled and twitched with hidden emotions and thoughts. Tail lashed to the side once, then fell still. The girl didnt blink for many moments as she watched the light reflect off of the water. Silence. She was mesmerized by the light and the sound of her own heart beat and breathing. It was the only things that seemed to take her away from her living hell. /Each beat, marks the point i get closer to enternal sleep./ She said silently to herself. Blink. /Each breath brings death closer/ She then added after a moment as she let out a deep sigh and smiled slightly. /And the closer to death i am,/ She shifted her position so that she was now leaning on her left bare foot. Her tail lashed to the side again and her black canine ears pricked forward towards the water. /The sooner i will leave this place/ She finally finished as she let out a sigh and smiled a little more. Blink, then frown. She looked at the boy floating, then snorted. /If only inner peace was that simple for me/ She thought as she let a small growl shake her chest. Passing DNA teens looked at her oddly as she snarled, but they were not surprised to see that it was her that was growling. Iona finally shook her head and sat down on the ground, her crimson eyes still watching the light relflecting on the water. She began to count her heart beats and tap her foot to them, almost as if her heart was a drum, keeping the beat of her life. Ear twitch. Iona's hands began to slid up her arms, as if remembering a past pain. As her hands slid, the sleeves of her shirt exposed her skin. Her fair skin revield the chapters of her book that she didnt speak of. Scars. Small growl. Iona squeezed her upper arms tightly for a moment as her bared her fangs. Her eyes were slightly glazed as memories played like a movie in her mind. She then smiled slightly and laughed ever so quietly. She didnt regret taking those gaurds lives. The other DNA lives that she had taken was another story, but the gaurds...Oh how she hated them all. Her hands slid back down, letting the sleeves of her shirt to fall again and cover the scars. Another snarl. She had had a taste of the normal life. She didnt know if the others had had that taste of a great life with family, friends and everything else that the ''Normals'' had. She doubted that many had by how they acted. She shook her head again. A heavy sigh. She looked down at her knees, all her emotions gone again. She raised her eyes back to the water after a few moments. Her mind began to fog over and relax again. thump. Thump. Thump. SHe blinked as she listend to the thumps of her heart and the wooshing of air into her lungs. Light danced in her eyes as she ignored the Swimming DNA and only watched the ripples. Motionless tail and ears. She finally relaxed enough that her ears fell still and her eyes were almost glazed. Her breathing was nice and even. No thoughts went through her mind, she was just...there. She felt as if her spirit had left her and was dancing in the light, using her heart beat as the beat to its steps, and the whooshing sound as the music. The dance was slow, and free flowing. No physics slowed or stopped her spirit from its dancing. She could almost smell sweet flowers and honey as she let herself escape from her body. /Is this what paradise will be like?/ her dancing spirit asked as her body just sat there, mesmerized. The question seemed to make her return to her body. Slowly, life began to show in the young wolf dna again. Her anger began to return to her eyes, but she still watched the water.

A snarl from the lakeshore sent ripples twisting through the water.
Dangerous, the water seemed to murmur into his ear.
He ignored it, but the hairs on his arms were getting firmer, growing straighter, the only sign he gave that he was worried in the slightest by the girl crouched by the water, snarling.
And then, she was gone. Just like that. Sam could've snapped his fingers, and it would've been an accurate representation of what had happened.
She was there one moment, and not the next. Typically, Sam wasn't a spiritual person, but the only way he could think of to describe it would be a meeting with God.
Bleh, there he was off on some tangent about Christianity...
Why should he believe in anything other than the physical world around him when the 'spiritual world' everyone referred to had never shown its face to Sam?
That was how he explained it to himself, anyways. In truth, he was afraid of that which he could not control.
Afraid....
What an ugly word, he reflected absently as one of his feet bumped against the rough concrete of the wall.
He kicked lazily off from it, drifting a few feet outwards before the current began to push him silently back towards the wall.
A few minutes passed, and his foot bumped into the wall once more.
Sam frowned, flipping over on his back and opening his amber eyes as wide as they would go to examine the dark depths of the water.
A flicker of amusement danced in his eyes as he righted himself, taking a few strokes through the water to carry him efficiently close enough to the wall to launch himself out, though he didn't that time.
Instead of showing off, as he was prone to do, Sam merely lifted his body out of the water with his arms, flopping down onto the grass with an exhausted sigh, his amber eyes drifting closed for an instant before they snapped open, and he rolled reluctantly onto his side to judge the distance between himself and the other DNA.
Uh-oh, he was too close. Close enough that when she snapped out here, he would be the first she went for.
Well, of course Sam had heard of Iona's legendary temper. What part of the lab didn't he know about?
"Hello." he grumbled in an effort to be polite.
She was probably one of those ones plotting to escape, and Sam didn't really want to associate with her much.
All he had to do was figure out where she fit in his machine...
And that wasn't to hard, was it?

Iona didnt seem to hear Sam for many moments. The glazed look was mixed with anger, but when she finally realized that he had spoken, both looks faded. A calm look soon made her eyes glitter slightly. She seemed to be in a better mood now that she had taken time to relax ever so slightly. Her ears turned towards him first. Then her head turned slightly. ''Hey,'' She said softly, not much emotion was in her voice, as if she was still partially lost in the light of the water. She nodded to him slightly, then turned her eyes back to the water, but her ears stayed facing him. confusion... He never spoke to her, rarely did any one, for the fear that she would harm them. She smiled slightly. She was desprate for some companion, so maybe she could actually pull this one in without scaring the shit out of him. She turned back to look at him. "Im Iona,'' She said with a small smile that she seemed to force. She was not used to being kind to people, but desprate times call for desprate measures. Her heart began to race slightly. The thought of having one companion made her giddy.

An awkward silence fell for several long moments, and Sam was of half a mind to leave then and there if she wasn't going to talk at all. Yeesh, she was stuck up -- maybe Sam didn't want her gear in his machine {lol, that sounds so weird... xD}. He wanted uniform, similar gears who would work well together.
Basically, that meant he wanted people of similar placid dispositions that he could control easily...
And then, very slowly, she began to turn towards him. Amusement flickered in Sam's eyes as he saw just how happy she was that he was talking to her. He couldn't really say much to Hey. though, so he didn't really mind much that he remained utterly silent. He had nothing to say, he was sure she'd understand.
He inclined his head slowly, "I'm Samuel." he didn't elaborate. This girl would call him Samuel, or she would call him Sam, he wasn't going to offer himself up as Sam. He liked being known as Samuel, anyways, it made him feel more . . . elaborate, more . . . royal. A small smile danced across his face, one not meant for others to understand.
He could hear her heart pick up, and Sam hoisted himself up onto his elbow, enjoying having this sort of affect on anyone, especially a good looking girl such as this.
Well, good looking for a DNA, anywayas. Iona was fairly pretty for someone who was going to get herself killed the instant she could escape, or rather, attempt to.

Iona smiled slightly. She couldnt say how happy she was that he didnt walk away from her like all the others. Oh the pain and dissapointment when others would walk away without giving her a chance. Then again, Alot of the other DNA's here had a vibe that Iona just didnt trust, especially the cats. Her tail wrapped around her wait and layed lightly on her lap. Her hands lightly pat the long black tail, as if she was comforting herself that everything was going to be alright. Her ears twitched. It was clear that she was hesitant on talking still, but she forced herself to form words, ever so softly and slowly. She had difficulty finding the words that she wanted, infact, she had problems finding words at all that would form a conversation. ''You are the Jelly, are you not?'' She asked with a small, curious tilt of her head. She looked towards the water again and sighed. Her crimson eyes didnt linger on the water for long, and were soon back on Samuel. Her nose twitched. //Deffenently some type of fish// She thought to herself as she took in his scent. She wasnt used to having another dna, especially male, close enough to her that she could get a clear scent ID on them, so she took advantage of the chance and made sure to pay attention to him and the smell. //Samuel// She said in her mind as she tried to remember the scent with the name. //Not too hard to remember,// She added in her mind with a small shrug to herself.

Samuel inclined his head, "You are correct. My DNA is of a box jellyfish. Simple enough that in the beginning, they could blend it with a human's." he wasn't very outgoing about his history, but if one listened to what he had to say, eventually they would piece together his past. Right then, for example, he'd said, in his own cryptic manner, that he had been one of the first few DNAs.
He didn't elaborate, though. Sam rarely ever did. Still, he could appreciate her, she was all right looking, which put her in the top few of the lab. Not very many 'pretty' girls and women had remained pretty after their DNA had been added. Iona, however, had a wild beauty about her, which Sam appreciated.
He appreciated all beauty, however, and it was her beauty as well as her legendary anger that made him decide that he would use her. If Sam was going to use her, he might as well begin now.
"You know, you're kind of pretty." he said this awkwardly, stumbling over his words, but Sam was perfectly in control. Every inch of those words was a lie.

Iona's ears went back and her fangs were suddenly bared. Her eyes were sharp with a small anger. ''Do not try your lies on me,'' She snarled as she got to her feet. Her tail lashed side to side a few times as she stood there for a moment, looking at him with bared fangs and betrayed eyes.
''Nothing but lies,'' She snarled to herself as she turned and began to walk to the other lake to sit. ''Everone...Lies,'' She growled. Her ears were pinned against her skull.
''Just like mother and father. Liars,'' She growled. She knew she didnt trust people for a reason.

Sam snorted, "Well, clearly I'll never try and compliment you again." he replied dryly. He neither admitted nor denied that he was lying. He had been lying, but he also had not. But he wasn't going to split hairs over that.
He flopped back down on the wet earth, "Bite me, and I'll kill you. Got that? You can be pissed all you want, you're not going to survive biting me. I don't care how offended you are by my 'lies'." his hairs bristled, and his muscles tensed. He was ready for whatever Iona thought she could throw at him.
He watched her walk away, "Well, that was a wasted gear. Too bad, that temper was something I could've used well. Better store that away for future reference. Pretty girls are prickly girls. You have to take a different take on manipulating them. That's honestly too bad." thinking out loud, as there was no one close to hear him, Sam sighed, raising his eyes to the heavens, and flicking them downwards.
He really found most people unbearable, Iona was no exception. But he'd gone out of his way not to alienate her, and this was where it got him. An exasperated sigh escaped Sam as he got to his feet, turning to head back towards the dorms.

Iona sat by the freshwater pond with a heavy sigh. She looked at the water then.. Plop. She looked down at her hand, confused. There was a small wet spot on her hand. She touched it with one finger. Plop. Another fell onto her hand. She could feel warm lines on her face. ''Im crying?'' She said softly as she touched the wet lines on her face. //Why am i crying?// she asked herself as she took a deep breath. She looked over at Sam, and felt the urge to cry intense. She snarled and turned her head as more warm tears slipped from her crimson eyes and onto the ground and her hand. ''Why did you get your hopes up, Iona?'' She said as she wiped her eyes dry, but more tears just took their place. ''Hes just another person,'' She said with a small hissing sound. ''But he gave you a chance,'' She added to herself softly. ''But it was only to harm you,'' She then said and fell silent. She closed her eyes as more warm tears fell to the ground. Not even the brilliant light reflecting off of the water could grab her attention.

Sam shrugged. He liked her potential.
Sam sighed, getting to his feet and walking over towards Iona.
It didn't take him long to catch up. When he finally arrived at her side, he caught her final words.
"Ya know, I don't manage to make many girls cry when I'm not trying." he snorted, "And it's not like I was trying to hurt you. Sheesh."
Overly sensitive much?
Still, he went on, his voice carefully modulated, "Anyways. I wanted to apologize."
Hmph. He hated lowering himself to another DNA's level, but he couldn't deny that he needed her. He needed someone who people would avoid, so he could get her carefully maneuvered into places he himself couldn't get.
Yes, he needed Iona.

Iona turned her head away from him, trying to hide the tears that rarely streaked her cheaks. ''You are the first, beised my parents,'' She admitted to him, still looking away from him.
Sniff sniff.
She hated all that came with the tears. The shakey voice, the damp eyes, runny nose, it all was annoying.

Sam raised an eyebrow, "The first to what? Make you cry? That's not so hard. I just rarely do it without intending to." he shrugged, settling down on the ground beside her. "Honestly, it was just a compliment. I wasn't trying to make you cry."
He shrugged, falling silent as he turned his gaze outwards towards the water, respecting her privacy. There was a hint of amusement in his amber eyes as his gaze settled on the water, which glittered in the slowly setting sun. It wouldn't get dark any time soon, but it didn't matter. The sun was still crawling down the horizon, marking the time that passed.

Iona laughed slightly. ''First to make me cry in about 7 years?'' She said with a snort. She sighed heavily and curled her knees up and layed her chin on her knees. A frown was still on her face and her eyes were slightly closed.
''I dont expect anyone to understand,'' She growled as she closed her eyes completely. She sighed heavily, taking in Sam's scent again. goosebumps formed on her arms slightly.

Sam grinned, "That's not so bad. I've made scientists cry, even Mercury. Of course, that time was an accident as well." he shrugged, "I mean, I didn't mean to sting the guy. He just freaked me out. He had his head right in front of my face, I just tried to get him out of my face." Sam chortled at the memory, "I was a new DNA back then. The only DNA." his voice took on a more reflective tone, and Sam shrugged.
"Will talking about it make you feel better?" he questioned. After all, if she felt an emotional connection to him, it would be far easier to manipulate her. And manipulation was his life, his addiction.
Sam was fairly sure that even if he wanted to stop, he wouldn't be able to. Manipulation was his cigarette. Addictive to the end.
